Lithophane or Shadow Photo Print – it’s a special kind of 3D print that looks like a glowing photo when you shine light behind it.
A lithophane photo print is a 3D-printed image that comes to life when illuminated from behind. Unlike traditional prints, it uses varying thicknesses of translucent material to control how much light passes through each part of the image:
- Thinner areas appear brighter, letting more light through.
- Thicker areas appear darker, blocking more light.
This creates a stunning grayscale image that’s only fully visible when backlit—like a glowing photograph sculpted in plastic.
- Material: Translucent PLA
- Technique: Height-mapped grayscale image converted to STL
- Printer: Ideal for FDM printers like the Ender-3
- Lighting: Best viewed with LED backlight or natural sunlight
